The Braverman Thesis: The Degradation of Work
4. Conclusion
Firstly one can easily recognize, that all above collected arguments lead to the conclusion that the cruel deskilling of work in the way Braverman describes this, cannot be accepted. In my opinion the main criticism is the one that Braverman made a class problem out of the deskilling of work. He saw a cruel complot of the capitalist class against the working class. This fact is becoming more and more untrue (even though it has never been like this) the capitalist Industrialists are on the other hand solely interested in greater and greater profit, this lead to the exploitation of the workforce sometimes also with dehumanised working conditions but the awareness is rising, that happy and challenged workers with transferred responsibilities and demanded creativity are even more productive.
On the other hand, one must not neglect the fact that Taylor’s ideas were indeed some places causing harm to workers and that criticism in misinterpreting Taylor’s ideas is suitable, but again something even Taylor himself realised.
