The Braverman Thesis: The Degradation of Work | Summary
The Braverman Thesis: The Degradation of Work
1. Introduction
In 1974 Harry Braverman published his famous work `Labour and Monopoly Capital` in which Braverman develops a critique of theoretical labour processes. This critique is mainly based on Taylor´s ideas of the labour processes in the mass production stage. Braverman enrolled in his approach many Marxist and radical sociologists and gained great fame among self-respecting non-conservative academics. In order to understand the view of Braverman and his criticism towards the ideas of Taylor one has to take a quick look at the development of labour processes in the past century and possibly also regard the times after his publication to be able to either verify or reconsider his views. Certainly his drastic and radical opinions had also critics which I will also regard later by taking a look at the debate the book inspired[1].
